Yui is a girl who's easily distracted by cute things and tasty food. She's a crybaby but cheers up easily if she gets some sweets. She eats a lot of sweets but she does not gain as much as she eats, she said to herself. In many ways some may say she's a child, and making sure she practices is a problem. When Yui takes good care of something, like her electric guitar- Gitah, she sleeps with it, plays dress up with it, and even also have tea time with it. When she wants to remember something, she forgets everything else. Yui's energy seems to come from cake. She is a clumsy, scatterbrain but optimistic and kind-hearted.
Yui gets good grades in school but is easily distracted by trivialities. She has her younger sister Ui, who is very mature and acts as the "older sister" of Yui, to take care of her and keep herself in line. She has a very easy-going nature, but has incredible concentration when hyped, though this is only limited to 3-4 subjects at a time. Despite all her flaws, Yui is still a fundamentally good-hearted girl who openly expresses love with hugs and adorable nicknames (most notably "Azu-nyan" for Azusa), and once devoted to something she is loyal to a fault, and can display near-genius levels of competence to the subject of devotion, as shown by her perfect score in the makeup exams to return to the band. She has perfect pitch and thus can tune her guitar by ear flawlessly. She is the group's main vocalist, although she is known to forget her lyrics in mid-performance, as well as overdoing things, making her unable to perform sometimes. She is the sort of person who learns by being shown, rather than by having read about it. Yui shows this lack of technical knowledge when she does not know what a palm mute or vibrato is when Azusa suggests the use of one when teaching her, but could use one in her music.

She has an ambiguous yet upbeat personality, but often has trouble remembering important club activities and announcements. She gets constantly yelled and wacked by Mio after forgetting to send in important forms concerning the club even though often reminded by Nodoka . Ritsu is cheerful, often likes making jokes and is sarcastic most of the time. She usually brainstorms for ideas to earn more money and for the club’s success (some times claimed as evil deeds by her friends). She has extremely high endurance against Mio's hits since little as she often teases Mio whenever Mio is cowering from something and has the opportunity to do so. Ritsu is always on the go and will stop at nothing for the success of the light music club.
However, time to time Ritsu had been a lazy character as well. When it comes to practicing, she only thinks of having fun with her band mates (such as having tea breaks that almost drived Azusa away). During training camps, Ritsu would always vote to play first the moment they arrive and is often supported by Yui. She is also weak in studying, as she often needs Mio's help, but when she becomes determine, she can get her work done in no time. Such determination can be seen on her goal towards Budoukan as well. She as a strong sense of confidence from an unknown source, although her confidence would often lead to the club's despair, such as losing their way in the middle of Kyoto. Ritsu has a tough front, and would not cry easily. Her weak spot is seeing her friends cry and would do anything to cheer them up.
~APPEARANCES~
Ritsu has light brown hair that slightly touches the edge of her shirt's collar, with her bangs pulled back with a yellow hairband. Two longer locks of hair would fall at the ends of her hairband and touches her shoulder. She has golden eyes, similar to her hair, and often wears a trademark grin.
Without her hairband, Ritsu's bangs could reach her nose. Other than yellow, Ritsu would wear other colored hairbands once in awhile, such as white, black, and red (especially when she was a child). At some point of the anime, Ritsu would use other objects to hold her hair up, like goggles when the girls visited the beach.
(Anime) Her school uniform is often untucked (tucked in once when Sawako forced her to), and blazer not buttoned. When the rest wears a beige-color pull over, she will only wear her blouse. Ritsu is seen wearing the school's sports attire and sweater most often among her friends. She had once exclaimed that she prefers wearing comfortable clothing than any other outfits, as she had difficulty drumming in those clothes.
(Manga) Ritsu in the manga do button her blazer, yet, like the anime, she does not tuck in her uniform when seen without her blazer. Besides school uniform, she is often seen in polo t-shirts.
Ritsu has a habit of putting both her arms at the back of her head.
Ritsu also happened to be the character who has the most number of bumps on her head through the series (mostly done by Mio).

Mio is a shy girl, and can be easily frightened, mostly due to scary stories and gross things brought up by her childhood friend, Ritsu Tainaka.
Mio originally intended to join the literary club, but is forced into the light music club by Ritsu. She gets excellent grades in school, but is bad with listening to stories involving macabre experiences, and cowers whenever something gross is brought up. While she can be mature and strict sometimes, she gets embarrassed easily, and is often subject to teasing from Ritsu and Sawako, their club adviser.
She cites that she chose bass since it is not the center of attention in the band, unlike the guitarist.[1] Mio is more technical when it comes to music, and Yui often comes to her when she is in need of more guitar tutorials. She writes most of the club's songs, although they often contain odd lyrics. As she is left-handed, she becomes entranced whenever she sees left-handed instruments, as well as left-handed musicians.
Due to an unexpected accident in one of their live performances, she acquired a huge amount of popularity; even a fan club for her is formed (much to her dismay considering the circumstances surrounding it). Because of this, most of her classmates voted her to play as Romeo in their class play.
According to Ritsu, Mio likes watching sports activities.

Mio has a long, straight black hair and gray eyes (that are angled slightly more than the other characters). Mio is the tallest member at 160cm, and has a larger bust than Ritsu and Yui.

She was originally going to join the choir club, but after Ritsu Tainaka's false flashback she thought it would be fun to join the club.
Mugi is a wealthy girl who has a sweet and gentle personality. Mugi is considered a piano prodigy since she was four and has experience winning in piano contests. She is the daughter of a company president, and her family has several villas in various places around Japan (and even one in Finland, much to Ritsu, Azusa and Ui's surprise when they try to contact her at home). She often brings sweets and confectioneries to her friends.The tea set and the tea which they drink often are unusually high. Although she is a sweet and gentle girl, she is often weirdly entranced by the sight of two girls interacting closely together, sometimes imagining something more risque in her head (both Mio and Ritsu find this awkward at times). She originally intended to join the choir club, but joins the light music club instead after receiving an invitation and encouragement from both Mio and Ritsu. Mugi displays a rebellious streak occasionally, due to her wanting to deviate from her wealthy nature, and diverts from a well-behaved and mature demeanor to the surprise of others. She also has a habit of getting a little too enthusiastic about experiencing new things that the others take for granted (such as ordering fast food, eating yakisoba at a festival, and purposely provoking Ritsu to hit her).
Despite her being wealthy, she also tries her hand at a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant.[2] While a lot of things do not bother her, she is fairly conscious about her weight (just like Mio), and she gets a bit anxious when her family's staff start spoiling her friends during villa visits.

Mugi has a long, wavy blonde hair and sapphire-blue eyes, and she has a very fair complexion that the other girls don't have. She appears to have very thick brown eyebrows that Yui likes to call a pickled radish.
Azusa Nakano 中野 梓

She decides to join the light music club after seeing the band's performance in the school festival and becomes the group's rhythm guitarist.
She is currently in the same year and class as Ui Hirasawa and Jun Suzuki, and has quite a mysterious demeanor. She is a self-proclaimed novice guitarist who has been playing the guitar ever since the fourth grade, while her parents are working in a jazz band.
She joins the light music club during the middle of the first season. She is often exasperated by the tea and sweets served by her club mates, and by the costumes they wear. However, she has a certain weakness for sweets and can be calmed down rather easily, sometimes just from being petted. She gets a tan very easily, once during their time at the beach and another during a music festival (even after applying sunscreen). Azusa is always frustrated with the club's aloof behavior, but she tends to get roped in inadvertently, and ends up enjoying herself as well. She is also very smart and takes care of Yui when she can, making study plans for her, teaching her guitar, and cheering her up by meowing or cosplaying for her.
After the original four members graduated, she succeeds Ritsu as the club's president. In the manga, Jun and Ui both joined the club immediately after the seniors graduated. However, in the anime, it was revealed in episode 26, which takes place before episode 23, that to Yui's delight, Jun and Ui were practicing with Azusa in preparation for the year's school opening session. This implies that Jun and Ui implicitly joined before the seniors graduated, in the anime.
She gets her own unique storyline in her senior year at high school in the latest manga issue with Jun and Ui.
~APPEARANCES~
Azusa has long black hair, which she wears in pigtails, and orange-tinted brown eyes. She is the shortest member of the group and has cat like features(e.g small eyes and a slightly thinner face).
Azusa's skin is the same shade as the other girls, but she's sensitive to sunlight even with applying heaps of sunscreen on.
Jun Suzuki 鈴木 純

Azusa's and Ui's classmate who often hangs out with the latter. Jun is generally a playful and easygoing girl, but she is sometimes rude without realizing it, which Azusa usually tries to correct her on. Ui tries to get Jun to join the light music club but ultimately fails due to a strange visit to the club room. Instead, Jun joins the jazz club because of a cool upperclassman. However, she starts to regret it when she hears about all the activities the light music club does. Jun plays a bass in the jazz club and has admitted to admiring Mio. She joins the light music club in the end of the series.
Jun has an older brother, Atsushi, nicknamed Acchan by Jun. He plays the bass in the university and helps Jun on "secret training sessions" because she apparently "still sucks at bass". She enjoys clinging onto him, since they are very close, which she denies, because with the nickname and all, it makes them look like a couple. Jun has a cat, which she named Azu-nyan #2. Jun once asked Azusa to look after it, though Azusa only agreed because no one else could.
Ui Hirasawa 平沢 憂

Yui Hirasawa's younger sister. Unlike her sister, she is a more mature person and handles household chores easily.
Ui's parents are a dating couple and are rarely home, so she does house tasks in their stead. When the story begins, Ui is a third-year junior high school student, but later she enters the same school as her older sister in high school the following year. Unlike her older sister, Ui is mature, smart, responsible and handles household chores well, but she has a great deal of love and respect for her older sister and takes particularly good care of Yui, striving to look after her even at the risk of her own health.She has an extreme talent for playing the guitar, and became capable of playing with the rest of the light music club band only after a few days of practice. Ui is actually considered as the ultimate groupie for her sister's band and supports them with all her heart. She occasionally provides a narrative to the story. She is in the same class as Azusa and hangs out with her sometimes.
She is a fast learner like Yui, as she was once at a baseball center with Jun and Azusa, and after Ui overheard some tips from a stranger, she followed his tips and managed to score a homerun on her first at-bat.
Sometimes, she teaches Yui how to play some parts of the guitar since Yui is not so good at reading sheet music. Despite being a year younger than Yui, she looks nearly identical to her with her hair down. Once, she pretended to be Yui when her sister was sick but failed because she did not know the nicknames Yui had given to the light music club members and Sawako said Yui's breasts were bigger.
Ui and Yui look like twins but they're not the same age. One time Ui pretended to be Yui because she wanted to try to hug Azusa.
She joins the light music club along with Jun at the end of the series, becoming a guitarist like her sister.
~APPEARANCES~
Although Ui is nearly identical to Yui with her hair down, she wears her hair in a small ponytail. In the second season it shows a slight color difference with their hairs (Ui's looks more copper-like).
Sawako Yamanaka 山中 さわ子

~CHARACTERS~
Teacher at Sakura High. She was originally the adviser of the wind instrument club but then she was forced to become the adviser of the light music club by Yui, Mio, Ritsu and Mugi.
An alumna of the school and a former member of the light music club, she does not want people to find out that she was formerly a member of a death metal band (Death Devil), thus she covers up by being mild and gentle to her coworkers and especially to students.
She is forced to be the adviser of the light music club, as Ritsu blackmails her after the girls learn of her past.
Though she has a mature and gentle demeanor in the school, Sawako (affectionately addressed as "Sawa-chan" by both Ritsu and Yui) displays a totally different, completely authentic character when she is alone with the light music club. In reality, she is rather wild, lazy and quite an irresponsible teacher who enjoys dressing up the light music club in (sometimes embarrassing) cosplay costumes (like French maid uniforms), much to the dislike of Mio.
She names the club band "Houkago Tea Time" after the members take too long deciding on a name themselves. She once momentarily pitches in for Yui with her Epiphone "1958" Korina Flying V electric guitar (anime only).
She becomes the girls' homeroom teacher in their third year, and puts Nodoka and all the band members (except Azusa, since she is a grade lower) in the same class so she does not have to remember as many names.
Nodoka Manabe 真鍋 和
~CHARACTERS~
Yui's childhood friend and is a member of the student council.
As a normal, well-mannered and intelligent girl, she is generally taken aback by the light music club's odd behavior, and easily gets annoyed with Ritsu whenever she forgets to fill in the club's application forms. She shares the same class as Mio in their second year, who appreciates her companionship tremendously, she being the only person Mio knows in her class. In her third year, she becomes the student council president and ends up in the same class as Yui and the others. She also becomes the president of Mio's fan club.
She has the same last name (spelled with the same characters) as Yoshiaki Manabe, lead guitarist for The Pillows.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
Sumire Saito 斉藤 菫 菫 斉藤
a shy blonde girl who meets Azusa, Ui and Jun after Yui and the others graduate. She is a freshmen, two years below the other light music club members. Azusa, Ui and Jun met her at the club room. Sumire knows how to make delicious tea like Mugi. Sumire is the fourth member of the Light Music Club since Ui and Jun joined. When Azusa, Ui and Jun first saw her they thought she was a foreigner because of her blue eyes and blonde hair. Sumire eventually became the Light Music Club's drummer after showing talent in the instrument.
She first appeared in the fifth volume of the manga on the second chapter. Apparently, despite having the same color hair and eyes as Tsumugi Kotobuki, she works as a maid for the Kotobuki family and Tsumugi has given orders to her to put away the club tea sets she left behind but fails to do so. Tsumugi has a middle-aged butler named Saito (as proven in many chapters), so Sumire may be related to him.
Sumire feels enclined to keep her role as a maid a secret, fearing that Tsumugi would then find out from the others that the tea sets would not be taken away, and she would fire her. In chapter 62, she almost says she sees Tsumugi as an older sister, but kept quiet, so that she would not give away herself.
Sumire was afraid of Sawako after she wanted to take her as her victim to play dress up (before Sumire entered the club). She would feel uncomfortable seeing Sawako around her at first, but she soon got used to her after she entered the club.
Nao Okuda 奥田 直
a first-year student, in Sumire's class. She is the fifth member of Azusa's Light Music Club. Her first appearance was made in the fifth volume on K-ON!, on the fourth chapter, where she was checking out every single club in the school. Due to her physical weakness, she had terrible luck in the tryouts. After taking all the clubs, Okuda decided on joining the Light Music Club, because she had the most luck there.
It's hinted that Okuda might know how to play the violin due to her holding Azusa's guitar like one, this could also mean that she has no proper knowledge how to use a guitar. She demonstrates considerable knowledge in music theory, and has talent in computer music production.
She has short, black hair and light purple eyes. She wears rimmed glasses, identical to those of Nodoka. Okuda is shown to be quite clumsy as seen when she accidently broke one of the thickest strings on Azusa's guitar, hinting she might be quite strong. Okuda was first shown wearing a blank expression but later on she is seen giving a gentle smile. She is the eldest of five siblings, despite her "little sister" aura.
Megumi Sokabe 曽我部 恵
both the president of the student council, and (secretly) the president of Mio's fan club. Nodoka succeeds her in both roles after Megumi graduates (reluctantly in the latter case). Megumi is revealed to be stalking Mio towards the end of her third year, but only because she would miss Mio once she graduated. The light music club gives her a private concert as a graduation gift. After she had graduated, the club holds a tea party for Mio's fan club and invite Megumi, only she couldn't come because she had to attened University so Azusa emails her a picture of the fan club.
On the restart of the K-ON! Manga, Megumi reappears, sharing her dormitory with Yui, Mio, Ritsu and Mugi during their tenure in Japan Women's University.
Satoshi Tainaka 田井中 聡
He first appears when Ritsu is walking home with him from the movies. He then ventures off with a friend from school he saw on the way home. He seems to respect his sister Ritsu but still acts like a normal boy. Satoshi knows Mio because she and Ritsu have been friends for so long, but becomes shy when Ritsu brings the rest of the light music club home without telling him. He also likes to spy on his sister sometimes. For instance, when Mio and Ritsu were practicing for their class play, when Ritsu practices her dialogue, Ritsu finds out that Satoshi is laughing outside her room.
Kawakami 川上
The manager of a live house that the light music club decides to perform in on Live House!.
On Live House!, she is reunited with Sawako Yamanaka who turns out to be an acquaintance of hers. Kawakami calls Sawako "Catherine" while Sawako calls Kawakami "Janice".
Aya アヤ
The bassist of the band Love Crysis (ラブクライシス Rabu Kuraishisu). She is a big fan of Mio.
Aya also attended Houkago Tea Time's performance at the school festival (she even remembers Yui as "the one who showed up late"), and is one of the first people (or "strangers," as Ritsu puts it) outside of school to compliment the band. She and Maki also invites the band to attend their own show in the future, and Aya gives Yui a Love Crysis CD, which inspires Yui to come up with a band logo.
Maki マキ
The drummer of the band Love Crysis (ラブクライシス Rabu Kuraishisu).
An old middle school friend of Ritsu's and Mio's, she invites the light music club over to perform in a live house. She played for the band Love Crisis and was the girl who invited the girls to perform at the concert.
Ton トン
A turtle the Light Music Club keeps in the music room.
During a trip to the mall, Yui finds Azusa staring at a pig-nosed turtle in a tank. Azusa really just thinks the turtle is odd, but Yui assumes she wants it, and when the band comes into some money from the sale of Sawako's old guitar, Yui suggests that they buy the turtle for Azusa, so she'll have a "freshman" to take care of. After being presented with the turtle, Azusa points out that Yui was the one who wanted it, but decides to keep it. Yui names the turtle Ton, and clearly adores it more than anyone else. Eventually, Asusa herself grows quite attached to the little reptile, but of course denies these affections, staying true to her emotionally reserved and stoic personality. Sometimes, Azusa forgets to feed Ton. Towards the end of their final semester, Mio feeds Ton-chan for the first and last time, lamenting that she has not done so more often before graduation.
Tomi Ichimonji 一文字 とみ
Often nicknamed "Ma" is an old woman neighboring the Hirasawa household. She is very kind and has been caring for Yui and Ui since kindergarten, often giving them any extra food that she has. Yui is especially fond of her, and enters a local talent show in order to win a spa trip for her.
Norimi Kawaguchi 河口 紀美
Attended Sakura High with Sawako, and like her, is a former guitarist in the heavy metal band Death Devil. She comes back into Sawako's life to reunite the band so that they can perform at a former classmate's wedding reception, but Sawako initially refuses. Norimi then approaches the current light music club for help, but when they too are unable to convince Sawako, Norimi somehow talks them into replacing Sawako at the performance. Norimi eventually gets what she wanted all along: when Sawako sees the poor job that her students are doing as a heavy metal band, she jumps onstage in order to save Death Devil's reputation.
