INUYASHA THE MOVIE 2 :
THE CASTLE BEYOND THE LOOKING GLASS
STORY
The story begins after the defeat of Naraku by InuYasha, Kagome Higurashi, and their friends. There is some initial doubt as to whether Naraku is truly dead until it is revealed that the cursed void in Miroku's right hand is gone and Kagura's heart is in her body again. Kagome, Sango, and Shippo relax in a hot spring. Akitoki Hojo shows up, who is quite confused as to how he can get to Mt. Fuji. He notices the three bathing, but is caught by Miroku. Sango then notices Miroku and manages to throw a huge boulder on him. Inuyasha hears the noise and comes running, Tetsusaiga drawn. However, Kagome, who is really afraid that InuYasha will see her naked once again, orders him to sit, who promptly falls on the three. As Akitoki crawls away, contemplating his luck, InuYasha and Kagome are once again in a fierce debate. The group disbands with InuYasha, Kagome and Shippo off to pursue the remaining shards of the Shikon no Tama.
Miroku returned to his master, and Sango returned to her village to search for Kohaku.
Kagome briefly returns to her time period to catch up in school and happens to be learning about the legend of Princess Kaguya. Kaguya was a maiden from the moon, found by a bamboo cutter in the forest. As suitors proposed to her, Kaguya presented to them impossible tasks before returning to the moon.
Kagura and Kanna, the two surviving incarnations of Naraku, are somewhat restless now that Naraku is dead. They come across a mirror in a hidden shrine and awaken a maiden who declares herself Kaguya, Princess of the Heavens. In exchange for freeing her, Kaguya promises to give Kagura her true heart's desire, freedom. Kagura and Kanna set out to recover five items that will free Kaguya from her mirror completely.
Kohaku has returned to Sango's village without any memory as to who he is. Miroku's master, Mushin, presents him with a task that is to be given to the surviving descendant who defeats Naraku. Miroku is to destroy a yōkai who threatens to cast the world into eternal night, at which the first sign of the yōkai's appearance for the first time in 50 years is a full moon shining for many nights.
Kagome returns to InuYasha's time and the two of them, along with Shippō, go to find the remaining shards of the jewel. InuYasha detects Naraku's presence and runs into Kagura instead. Kagura easily rips the sleeve off of InuYasha's kimono. She and Kanna are about to take their leave when the moon appears and a poem is said. Kaguya makes her appearance and uses her ability to discern the dark desires of InuYasha's heart against him. Kagura unleashes her most powerful attack, Dance of the Dragon and InuYasha sends it back to her using his Backlash Wave but is stopped by Kanna who uses her mirror to send the attack back at InuYasha. Kagome manages to stop Kaguya from inflicting major damage to InuYasha and the demons leave, with Kaguya noting Kagome has a strange aura about her that does not agree with the flow of time.
InuYasha and company leave to pursue Kaguya and run into Akitoki Hōjō, the ancestor of Kagome's classmate, who is supposed to dispose a family heirloom (a hagoromo/celestial robe) into Mount Fuji. He joins them, partly because he has a bit of a crush on Kagome and partly because he is being blackmailed by Shippo for an earlier incident. Meanwhile, Kikyo investigates Naraku's death and has come across a slaughtered village where a dying girl gives her the Stone Bowl of Buddha.
Miroku (with his tanuki servant, Hachiemon) journeys to his grandfather's (given the name Miatsu) grave to find the yōkai he is supposed to destroy. He hears the local legend of the celestial maiden, Kaguya. Miroku's grandfather, who one of the most powerful priests in the series, which is evidenced by the fact that he was able to defeat Kaguya alone, sealed her away into a mirror and was unable to kill her due to her beauty and his own lecherous ways. Kaguya's hagoromo was entrusted to a family that was also given specific instructions for disposing of the robe should Kaguya be freed. Kagura arrives in Sango's village and attacks Kohaku, taking off with the Swallow's Cowrie Shell that was in Kohaku's possession. After Kikyo surrenders the Stone Bowl of Buddha without a fight to Kagura, she and Kanna free Kaguya from her mirror. Kaguya goes to find her hagoromo and runs into InuYasha and Kagome. After pinning InuYasha to a tree, Kagome fires an arrow to kill Kaguya, but she absorbs it and fires it at InuYasha. Kagome then jumps in front of the arrow and Akitoki throws the hagoromo/celestial robe in between the arrow and Kagome but Kagome gets hit by her own arrow in order to save InuYasha. InuYasha thinks Kagome is dead and threatens Kaguya. Then Kaguya takes Kagome and tells InuYasha to follow if he desires.
Kaguya, whose power has increased exponentially now that she has the hagoromo, prepares to freeze time into eternal night. InuYasha meets up with Miroku and Sango, Kohaku, Kirara and Shippo, who survived the time freeze thanks to Kagome's bandages, which give them immunity, probably because they are from another time, again and they prepare to rescue Kagome and stop Kaguya. InuYasha then reclaims his piece of the robe of the fire rat that Kaguya had stolen. It is then revealed that Kaguya was in fact a demon who absorbed the real Kaguya and taken on her beauty and power. Kaguya tries to turn InuYasha into a full demon but his voice woke Kagome up and she attempts to stop the transformation by hugging him, saying " I love you as a half demon, InuYasha!" Because of that, InuYasha sees Kagome (in his mind) running toward him. As InuYasha tries to attack her, Kagome says "I love you. I love you as a half demon." This stops InuYasha from attacking. However, it doesn't work completely, to awake Inuyasha's human spirit, Kagome kisses him. Shippo becomes embarrassed and hides. Kaguya orders InuYasha to kill Kagome. During their embrace, Kagome mentally asks InuYasha, "InuYasha, you want to be with me, don't you"? While she thinks this, a tear rolls down Kagome's cheek. It works, as InuYasha and Kagome kiss, Kaguya's mirror cracks, returning InuYasha to his half demon form. InuYasha returns the kiss and tells Kagome in a hug, that he will remain as a half demon for her. But then Naraku reappears from Kohaku's back, revealing that he had purposely faked his death to draw Kaguya out. However, Naraku during this point in the series was still a half demon and thus wasn't able to battle her on equal terms. Kagome then combines her power with that of Miroku as she launches a piece of his staff in the form of an arrow and destroys Kaguya's mirror. InuYasha then manages to destroy Kaguya's physical form using his backlash wave (Bakuryuha). Kaguya shows up again in the form of a black cloud and attempts to absorb Kagome in an effort to gain a new body. However, she is killed by Miroku's Wind Tunnel attack; fulfilling Miroku's grandfather's wish. Naraku then escapes with Kohaku, Kagura, and Kanna through the broken mirror, followed by the others. Shippo, who was lagging behind in the tunnel but when he looks back, Kaguya is right behind. But he wakes up in a field. After the credits, Miroku causes Sango to slap him in the face once again while trying to kiss her. Miroku's excuse is that Kagome and InuYasha were being intimate. InuYasha and Kagome both turn deep shades of crimson upon hearing this. In the end Akitoki Hōjō throws Kaguya's hagoromo into a volcano to stop any other beings from ever using its power.
CHARACTERS
かぐや KAGUYA
The Princess of the Heavens and the main antagonist in "InuYasha the Movie: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass". Once Naraku is believed to be dead, she usurps his underlings and seeks out certain items that will allow her to control amazing powers.
APPEARANCE
Kaguya is a very beautiful, young woman, with long dark hair and teal eyes. She is a celestial maiden or "tennyo" . While she dresses in a traditional kimono at the beginning, she then changes to wearing a more revealing outfit after obtaining the five special items and the "Feathered Robe of the Heavens". She wears a fan-like hair ornament with her kimono, but large gold hairpins in her armoured outfit.
PERSONALITY
Kaguya despises all living beings because they seem to rely too much on the flow of time. She is arrogant, condescending, manipulative and uses archaic Japanese terminology. Kaguya is extremely confident in her own abilities; her ultimate goal is to freeze time and cover the world in darkness.
Like most demons, Kaguya finds half-demons unseemly and repugnant, but bears a particular disgust for Naraku, which is somewhat ironic given that they both gain power through the same means.
HISTORY
Kaguya initially appears trapped within a golden mirror, called "The Mirror of Life", which is similar to Kanna's mirror. It is enshrined in a cave within the Forest of Bewilderment, near Mount Fuji. A celestial maiden and the Princess of the Heavens, Kaguya is a demoness who obtained a tennyo's eternal youth, and Feathered Robe of the Heavens. Because Kaguya had sought to eliminate life and collapse time once in the past, Miroku's grandfather, the monk Miyatsu, managed to seal her within her own Mirror, in order to stop her. The Feathered Robe of the Heavens was entrusted to the Hojo family, which was given explicit directions to destroy the celestial robe by tossing it into Mount Fuji should a full moon shine for many days without changing.
After Naraku's destruction, a directionless Kagura is drawn by an always taciturn Kanna to the cave in the Forest of Bewilderment. After awakening Kaguya, she states that what remains to do (after Naraku's death, which seems too please her) is to "eliminate life on this world, bringing and eternal night into my hands". Kaguya promises to grant Kagura her heart's desires in exchange for freeing her from her mirror prison. They agree, if for nothing else than to relieve their boredom. Kanna takes Kaguya's mirror and she sets out with Kagura to obtain the five items to break Kaguya's seal.
THE FIVE ITEMS
Five items are required to break Kaguya's Mirror seal and to grant her the power to summon eternal night. With the help of Kagura and Kanna, Kaguya recovers each of these items. Each item is cast in a corresponding lake of Fujigoko (The Five Lakes of Mount Fuji) and then a poem stanza is recited alternately by either Kaguya or Kanna.
Representation of the items (clockwise from top): Jeweled Branch of Hourai, Swallow's Cowrie Shell, Jewel of the Dragon's Neck, The Stone Cup of Buddha and The Robe of the Fire Rat.
Jeweled Branch of Hourai : Literally, a jewel branch; this item was enshrined along with the Mirror of Life in the cave inside the Forest of Bewilderment; it represents color green. The Jeweled Branch of Hourai was cast in Lake Shouji with the verses: "I ventured to see if what I had heard was true, with this jeweled branch with leaves so real. T'was nothing more than an empty promise.".
Jewel of the Dragon's Neck : Obtained in a unknown-location river; this item is a yellow spherical jewel with markings on it. This jewel was cast in Lake Yamanaka with the verses: "Oh arrow of mine with power pure and immense to slay the dragon, do your good deed fast and swift; grasp the crystal in its neck.'"
The Robe of the Fire Rat : Naturally, this item corresponds with InuYasha's red robe. Lake Motosu was the place where this item was tossed with the verses: "Could you have but known that it would burn so swiftly this raiment of fur, you would not then have set which was such little show of concern".
Swallow's Cowrie Shell : This item was a necklace with a crafted shell, originally carried by Kohaku but stolen from him on an ambush by Kagura.. Its color is blue and it was tossed in Lake Sai with the following words: "Time has passed swiftly as I've waited to see the shell you promised: they say I wait in vain, could this be so?"
The Stone Bowl of Buddha : The last of the five items, it was Buddha's stone cup and it was enshrined in a unknown village. It was first recovered by Kikyo, but then she gave it on her own accord to Kagura. Its color is purple and it was cast in Lake Kawaguchi, with this words: "I hope to find the gleam of the fallen dew but nothing can I see, why did you coyodew to Mt. Ogura?".
POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Kaguya's powers and abilities are described in the order of their appearance in the movie.
Absorption : This is immanent to Kaguya's nature; just as Naraku, Kaguya has the power to devour other beings and steal their powers. She devoured the real celestial maiden to gain her powers, her body and her immortality. She intended to devour Kagome to get both her holy powers and her ability to erect "time barriers".
Immortality : Kaguya is a celestial maiden and hence is immortal. She also has an eternally young body. It is hinted that regular weapons have no effect on her body. Kaguya called Kagome a pretentious girl and she seemed confident to be able to deflect her arrow just with the sleeve of her kimono (not knowing about Kagome's sacred powers). Kaguya could also regenerate her arm after receiving a blow of InuYasha's Wind Scar.
The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass : After being awakened, Kaguya summons a celestial castle that appears on the surface of Lake Motosu, Mount Fuji. The castle's actual location is inside the mirror and can be accessed through the mirror or the lake.
Nature Manipulation : Kaguya has the ability to summon a continuous full moon. She appears to have a connection with cherry blossoms. This is specially observed when she retrieves the Feathered Robe of the Heavens from InuYasha's group. Instants before making her appearance, the cherry tree located where InuYasha's group was resting, suddenly bloomed. As Akitoki Hojo pointed, it was not natural to have cherry blossoms in that time of the year and so suddenly.
Teleportation : Kaguya can teleport from location to location, along with at least one additional person, as seen when she kidnaps Kagome. She can also visibly teleport by fading into a breeze of cherry blossoms.
Telekinesis : Kaguya has been shown to be able to levitate objects and even people, such as her mirror, her Feathered Robe of the Heavens and Kagome.
Flight : Kaguya has the ability to fly and hover in mid air.
Wish Granting : After pointing out that Kagura's freedom (after Naraku's supposed death) is no more than an illusion, Kaguya promises to grant her real freedom. Kaguya was also about to grant InuYasha's wish to become a full-fledged demon, in exchange of making him her servant.
The Mirror of Life : The Mirror of Life acts as a medium for many of Kaguya's abilities.
The Black Hole : Kaguya can use the mirror to summon a "black hole" that absorbs InuYasha's Wind Scar power and throws it back in many directions. This power is particularly destructive as it uses the enemy's power, augments it and redirects it.
Deflecting Attacks : Kaguya used the mirror, along with her mystic chants, to deviate InuYasha's Wind Scar when she was fetching the Feathered Robe of the Heavens. She also throws Sango's Hiraikotsu back at her and Kohaku.
The Whips of Light : Kaguya makes these whips come out of the mirror. They have the power to thrust people away.
Reversing Mirror : After noticing Kagome's sacred powers, she receives Kagome's arrow with the Life Mirror and reverses the attack, pointing the arrow at InuYasha.
Pentagram Seal : As a reminiscence of her own broken seal, Kaguya traps Kagome with a pink-colored pentagram. Kagome is only able to break the seal with the power of the Sacred Jewel along with her own sacred powers.
The Six-Headed Dragon : When InuYasha, Miroku and Sango try to access Kaguya's castle, she summons forth a six-headed dragon that shoots blasts of fire and thunder. Although its formidable appearance; as Kagura points, it was relatively easy beaten by InuYasha's Windscar along with Kikyo's sacred arrow.
The Feathered Robe of the Heavens : Although having multiple functions that overlap with other of Kaguya's abilities, the celestial robe was specifically to cast eternal night in the world and giving her infinite regenerative abilities . It also prevents her soul from getting stolen.
Meikyoshisui no Hou : Translated as "The Clarity and Serenity Spell, it is probably Kaguya's most fearsome technique. Its ultimate use is to freeze time and to bring the world into "eternal night". This spell is ineffective against Kagome, her items, and anyone wearing them (i. e. InuYasha worn the pendant given to him by Kagome) because, as Kaguya herself stated, the flow of time around her is different.
The Illusion of Parallel Mirrors : After InuYasha gets into the castle and manages to keep moving after the time was frozen, Kaguya used this power. InuYasha had not really gotten into the real castle, but into a parallel illusion. InuYasha then discovers that the real castle is the one in the reflexion of water; the world within the mirror.
Scarlet Tendrils : Scarlet-colored tendrils grow out of Kaguya's armor. She can use them to pierce her enemies, as she did with InuYasha.
Golden Hairpins : The golden hairpins Kaguya wears can be enlarged and used as swords.
Light Reflexion : After Naraku wakes up from his stasis and reincarnates from Kohaku's body, Kaguya uses the mirror to cast a light that disintegrates Naraku's body. Kaguya was about to use the same spell on InuYasha but Miroku saved him using his Wind Tunnel.
Burning Sphere Attack : While fighting InuYasha, Kaguya conjures a Burning Sphere with her golden hairpin sword. This final spell was turn back at her when InuYasha used his Backlash Wave.
Enhanced strength:Kaguya was able to stop Sango's weapon as well able to grasp Inuyasha's sword and throw it across the room with one hand while attacking nimbly.
Immunity : When Kaguya holds and throws Inuyasha's sword she is unaffected by its demonic barrier that prevents demons from holding it. (This could be due to the absorption of the celestial maiden as well as possessing the celestial robe giving her a immunity to the Tetsaiga's barrier or just the shear size of her demonic power).
KAGUYA'S END & AFTERMATH
Kaguya uses her burning sphere against Inuyasha who reverses it using Tetsusaiga. However using her Black Hole ability she reverses the attack. Inuyasha counters again. As the 2 powers collide Kaguya in her overconfidence taunts Inuyasha saying that such power cannot defeat her. Kagome uses this opportunity to fire a piece of Miroku's staff at her. Kagome's attack nullifies Kaguya's immortality and renders her vulnerable. Inuyasha's attack overwhelms Kaguya's attack and the celestial maiden is incinerated by her and Inuysha's powers. After her body is destroyed, Kaguya tries to take Kagome as her new body. Naraku wanted to take advantage of this to devour Kaguya's soul, but InuYasha prevented it. Kaguya's sinful life came to an end when she was killed by Miroku (fulfilling his grandfather's wish) by absorbing her wicked soul into the Wind Tunnel. With Kaguya dead her castle begins to crumble. Everyone in the castle including Naraku escapes throught the Life mirror.Immediately a beam falls on the Mirror of Life. In the real world Kagome says to Inuyasha they managed to thwart another of Naraku's plans. On the other hand Miroku talks with Sango. He comments that Kaguya was truly beautiful, surprising Sango before he comments that Sango would be the only maiden for him.
