花咲くいろは Episode ~

EPISODE

1. Sixteen Years of Age , Spring , Still Buds
    十六歳、春、まだつぼみ

Upon returning from school one day, Ohana Matsumae learns that her mother is going on a moonlight flit with her boyfriend to escape from his debt and they are sending her to live at her estranged grandmother's hot spring inn in the country. When her best friend, Kōichi Tanemura, hears of this, he is saddened. He then suddenly confesses his love for Ohana before running off, not seeing her off when she leaves. As Ohana arrives at Kissuisō, she makes a bad first impression with one of the employees, Minko Tsurugi, before being informed by her grandmother, Sui Shijima, that she is to work at the inn to earn her keep.
She is shown around the inn by the head mistress, Tomoe Wajima, and another employee, Nako Oshimizu. When Ohana notices the hard work Minko has to do, she tries to do something nice for her by airing out her futon, but it ends up falling off a window and landing near some customers. After Minko is slapped by Sui for Ohana's mistake, Ohana demands to be slapped even harder, though Minko doesn't particularly thank her for it. Sui indeed slap Ohana harder, which Ohana is grateful to accept.

2. Vengeance is a Staff Meal 復讐するは、まかないにあり

Sui instructs Nako to teach and train Ohana to become a housekeeper of the inn, even though Nako is quite shy about it. When Nako has to attend to another duty, Ohana, having been taught to only rely on herself, cleans another room, where the author Tarō Jirōmaru is staying, by herself. When the staff's breakfast is cancelled due to an error by Minko in the kitchen, Ohana makes breakfast for everyone, though this only serves to irritate Minko further. Afterwards, Tarō complains that some drafts for his stories have gone missing from his room which Ohana had cleaned earlier, having not been informed by Nako beforehand.
After Sui instructs the others to go to resume their duties rather than search for the drafts, junior chef Tōru Miyagishi takes Ohana to pick up some luggage by car. As Tōru mocks Ohana's ability to take care of herself, Ohana inadvertedly tells him to 'die' which nearly causes him to crash into a truck. Feeling guilty about it and taking a walk to reflect upon herself, Ohana decides to speak her mind against Minko and Nako, wanting to cook them their least favourite foods tomorrow as payback. The next day, Ohana finds Tarō's draft in a misplaced garbage bag. But those drafts turn out to be erotic stories using her and the other employees as characters. Before she can do anything further, she is discovered by Tarō.

3. Balut ホビロン

Minko and Nako heads to the dining room to eat the meal that Ohana prepared for the staff, which they anticipate will include their least favorite food. But when they arrive, they see ingredients that are still in the middle of cooking, but no sign of Ohana herself. While, in Tarō's room, Ohana is helping Tarō get some ideas for his erotic novels, but he can't seem to get the grasp of it. Tarō has already admitted to Ohana that he was trying to come up with sex novels to pay his hotel bill, the reason Ohana complied to help.
The staff members are now searching for the missing Ohana when Nako happens to check on Tarō's room. While Ohana is hiding, Tarō tries to make Nako go away by making insults about the staff. But hearing this, Ohana jumps out and tells him to take back the insults. Because Ohana is "revealed", Tarō tries to confine Nako, but there are other staff members behind her. Overwhelmed, Tarō runs away in one of the inn's trucks while the rest of the staff chases after in another car.

They chase him to the sea, where Tarō stands at a cliff ledge. He says he's a failure who can't pay his debt, even after acting so high over the staff. But Sui tells him that she has confidence that he could pay it off if he becomes serious and tries to win the prize. Continuing to say he's a failure, he jumps into the ocean without thinking, but he is asking for his life now. Nako surprisingly jumps in and saves him, and bythe time the others reaches her, it’s almost sunset. Tarō continues his babbles that he’s useless, but Ohana straightens him up, saying that he’s a great novelist who was able to know something about her she herself did not know.

It is already late, so the staff agrees to eat at the seaside where they are. At that time, Ohana persists to give Minko the spinach-filled dish she made earlier. Minko takes it, but she responds with "Balut(ホビロン hobiron)!" Later on, Ohana is ready to go to bed, when she sees a notebook on Minko's bed, explaining all the insults she has said so far, especially "Balut(ホビロン hobiron)", which means "Truly, surprisingly, out of question" (ほんとに-びっくりするほど-論外 HOntoni - BIkkuri suru hodo - RONgai). She chuckles at this when she suddenly receives a message on her cell-phone. She thinks it's her mother, but it's Kou, which makes her happy for some reason she can’t explain herself.

4. Grey Heron Rhapsody  蒼鷺ラプソディー

The spring break is now over, and it is the start of school for Ohana, Minko and Nako. In order to pay for his debts, Tarō Jirōmaru is now working part-time at Kissuisō, under the supervision of Enishi Shijima. Ohana says her "good morning" to the both of them, and the two comments on her uniform in return. But Tarō goes a bit too far and Enishi notes of it, making Tarō head of to do more work. Later, at the back of the inn, Ohana is waiting for Minko, as Tōru Miyagishi comments that Ohana's uniform seems too big for her. Hearing this insult, she pulls up her skirt so its rim is at mid-thigh. Minko is already out and Ohana did not notice it.
On their way to school, the three girls converse, until they see a nice black car drive by. Nako points out it is from the Fukuya Inn, a rivalling inn to Kissuisō that is older out of the two. Later at the train station, Ohana exclaims about the blooming cherry blossoms nearby, which makes her suddenly remember about a time in the past about her and Kōichi. They were walking on a crowded street, which had cherry blossoms on the side, and Kōichi needed to help Ohana from getting lost in the crowd. She wonders what she should do for her reply to him.

They arrive at school, and Ohana is in Minko's class. Also, everyone in the class is in an uproar to the fact that Ohana is from Tokyo. After class, Ohana tries to talk to Minko, but the girls crowds around her and asks questions. Then the boys starts to ask her to take pictures of "Princess Minko". surpressed by these request, a girl speaking in an Kansai dialect interupts and escorts Ohana out ofthe classroom. The girl, Yuina Wakura, who is also reffered as a princess by the boys, saves Ohana. Yuina explains that her Kansai dialect is fake, for sheo nly did it for fun. She also explains that she's the successor to the Fukuya inn Ohana saw earlier in the day, but she doesn't care about it.

At lunchtime, Nako explains to Ohana that Minko is very popular, receiving many love-letters in her shoe box daily. They then hear Minko talking to a boy who's confessing to her. She rejects, but the boy asks what sort of man she likes. She says that he has a sharp tongue, but it truly kind; someone who always takes the initiative and is serious about work. As Ohana and Nako overhears this concrete explanation, Nako knows who Minko is talking about, while the boy is seen to be very sad.

Later in the day, Nako and Ohana talks bout the confession to Tomoe Wajima, who seems to be upset. for 'revenge' tomoe says she'll take a picture of Minko with her hair done up tight and ruin the school-boys' image of Minko. Ohana and Nako are pulling Tomoe back, when she asks the two if they have a boyfriend. Ohana replies that "Kō-chan" is not like that., which makes Tomoe supicious about the name. Later on, Ohana is tryingto reply to Kōichi's text, which she can't find a good reply for.

Going out in the rain for errands, Ohana is amazed to see grey heron. Nako says it lives in the area. the two arrives at the Fukuya inn to tell about an upcoming neighborhood association. Then the owner of the inn appears, which Ohana sees as scary. Outside, it is clear now and is the evening. Nako asks if they can return on a longer path, which Ohana agrees to. As the two walks on a path that approaches a small shrine, Nako explains she came to the Kissuisō inn in order to become more social. But she always comes to that shrine to pray to a goddess, one who gets easily lost. She also explains that there's a Bonbori festival in October that is to guide the gods and goddesses back to Izumo. Ohana is amzed by the thought of a festival, calling out to "Nako-chi" in exclamation. Hearing herself being called that, she is glad that she is being called by a nickname, such as calling Minko calling "Min-chi".

Back at the inn, Ohana is setting the meal for some guests, while Nako needed to answer a call. Ohana tries to set it out, but Tōru intervenes, saying she's doing it wrong. As he sets out the dishes correctly, he asks how she did at school, thinking she didn't making any friends. The two continue to lightly argue when Ohana happens to see Minko. She comes in to help with the setting of the dishes, telling Ohana that she can leave.

In an in-door bath, Ohana is thinking of a way to get friendly with Minko. At that moment, Minko enters the bath. Ohana thinks of talking about how mean Tōru is, and when she does, Minko responds. Thinking this is a good sign, Ohana continues with the insults until Minko suddenly lashes back in anger. Minko starts to talk about how he may be sharp-tongued, but he is always thinking about others; being more determined and kinder than anyone. Feeling those words a familiar, Ohana finally finds out that Minko likes Tōru. After a few moments of silence, Minko leaves the bath in embarassment.

Ohana tries to act kindly to Minko for the rest of the day, but she only acts cold. The next morning, Ohana follows Minko outside to apologize. But Minko again strikes back in anger, and holds Ohana by her neck. She continues this until the both of them see Tōru picking up Yuina from the Fukuya inn. Seeing this, Minko runs off, while Ohana tries to follow, only to be stopped by the grey heron...

After Minko takes her leave, Nako and Tomoe also arrives to see Ohana on the floor at the same place. They ask Ohana what happened to Minko, and she tells them. They are astonished by this event and also starts to wrry. But Tarō intervenes, asking for deeper details.
It is later found out that Tōru indeed did ask to go work at the Fukuya inn. In means to bring him back, Ohana heads over to the inn and asks the Madame Mistress there to give him back. She is also surprised because she never received this much money in one bundle before, especially within a month.
Takako Kawajiri, the business consultant advisor of Kissuisō finally appears, visitng the inn for the monthly inspection. In order to attract more customers to the 'low-grade' inn, she has a plan for the waitresses this time. She dismisses the cooks, who she worked with last time, while Ohana, Nako and Tomoe are left to deal with Takako. With the assistance of Enishi, she proposes that they should 'upgrade' the waitresses' uniforms to a more modern outlook, as she sets out tenfolds of clothes from china dresses to sexy suits. Nako and Tomoe are not happy with this suggestion, yet Ohana thinks it can be of some help.

The customers of the day arrives, and Ohana and Nako tests out their new outfit, the china dress, on the customer. Though it seems to be going well for the first seconds, because the customer that comes is a man, soon enough it fails as the rest of his family comes in: his wife and daughter. With the failure of the plan, Sui is not pleased.

After this failure, in order to show the greatness of the inn in a different than what Takako suggested, Denroku the janitor shows Ohana the secret yukata collection of Sui. Though this is supposed to be Sui and Denroku's secret, he lets Ohana and Nako use these yukatas to present themselves in a "Kissuisō" fashion. On the other hand, Tomoe Wajima wants to quit her job in order to start her own life and find a marriage partner. Thinking this a good chance, she tries to create trouble for these gamers so they would complain about Tomoe's performance, ending up with her being fired. While Minko and Tōru visit Tokyo's various restaurants to taste-test, Ohana runs into Igarashi, who tells her that she wants Ohana to decide what her feelings are for Kōichi. Igarashi herself believes that Ohana's indecisiveness in love is locking Kōichi's feelings up, therefore her own feelings does not reach him.
After Ohana gets a call back from Kōichi, who tells her about how he tried to visit Kissuisō while Ohana was searching for Tōru at that time, Ohana feels guilty and decides not to take Kōichi back to Kissuisō. Even though she receives this much, she plans to save the money instead of spending.
Later in the day, at school, Yuina listens to what Ohana, Minko and Nako will use their pay for, but is unhappy by the fact that they decided to use them for dull reasons. But by adding Ohana's twist to the dish that solved the heating problem, they finally decide to serve it on the menu of class 2-A's princess cafe.
Tōru arrives and Minko adds a big ketchup-heart around his omelette rice, even though he does not get the "message" on an emotional level as he sees that other men also received a similar kind of service. After requesting Sui to cancel the wedding, Sui finally shows that she is willing to have Takako wed with Enishi. At the inn, even though she asked to help Tōru, Minko's offer is turned down. While Minko is upset about this, Ohana proposes to have Minko try the dress on for them. But Minko harshly rejects the request, which upsets Ohana and the two starts to fight. The fight soon enough becomes a quarrel about their love life, which Tōru overhears a bit.
After being embarassed because Tōru overheard their quarrel, Minko runs away for a bit. Tōru follows and has a short talk with her and clears up the misunderstanding that he "like" likes Ohana. He says he may be interested in her, but it is not to that point of "love". Minko is happy to hear that she still has a good chance and tells Ohana that she won't give up on Tōru.

The wedding day arrives, and the day goes by safely. But at the end of the wedding, duirng the speeches by special guest speakers, the Madam Mistress, who is one of them, gives out an interesting speech. Later in the evening, the whole staff gathers to meet about what the Madam Mistress was talking about. She tells them that Denroku Sukegawa will resign from work and wishes to pass on the role of his Kissuisō journal, which he has been continuing for the entire 40-years of the inn, to someone. In Tokyo, Kōichi happens to meet Ohana's mother, Satsuki Matsumae. Kōichi asks if Ohana is fine, but Satsuki believes that he dumped Ohana, therefore answering that Ohana is obviously not fine. But Kōichi states he did not dump Ohana. Satsuki is amazed and invites him to her office. In a different part of Tokyo, Takako and Ohana search for the cheating director. With the help of the information supplied by Satsuki beforehand, the two finds and catches the director. Back at Satsuki's office, she shows the pre-made video, the director gave her, to Kōichi. When Ohana left Tokyo the first time, for Kōichi, the once beautiful life in Tokyo became all dull. He continues with these compliments and comments, but as Ohana is not that good at reading the mood, she has trouble comprehending what he wants to say. After some minutes, she ends up telling him to stop talking as she herself wants to tell him something. She invites Kōichi to come to the Bonbori festival, and he agrees to come. After that, Ohana returns to Kissuisō by bus, leaving Takako behind with her permission.
It is morning and no calls have come in. No reservations, meaning that there is no work for most of the staff. At the front, Nako answers a call, but then has a surprised expression. While in the kitchen, Tōru tells Minko that he will go out drinking with Ren in the evening, making her feel lonely. In order to cheer her up, he says "One man, and one knife. I'll train my cooking skills no matter where I am!", a phrase from his favorite cuisine manga Teppei, the Wandering Chef. Minko recognizes it and Tōru is amazed. In the back of the inn, the two are reading a few of the volumes of Teppei, until Tarō intervenes. The two chefs asks if he's also a fan of the series, but to their surprise and disappointment, he states that he was the one who wrote Teppei. Abruptly, Enishi appears in front of them, telling them to come and help.

Ohana has returned to the inn, but she is in utter surprise when she hears the staff moving around in haste. Soon enough, she is told that a whole lot of reservations have been requested. Takako has just returned and shows that one of the tour magazines has Kissuisō as its front page, with lots of good comments. The staff sees this as a good opportunity to prevent the closing down of the inn, but Sui continues to stay stubborn about the closing. In the baths, Ohana, Nako and Minko thinks about discussing the matter with the Madam Mistress. Even though the Madam Mistress does come in while they are in the bath, she finishes washing herself so quickly yet cleanly that the three girls did not have a chance to talk properly. But before Sui leaves the changing room, she asks Ohana to keep the next morning open.

The next morning, Ohana and the Madam Mistress has gone out early to Sui's husband's grave to pray. While back at the inn, Enishi continues to try and fight the Madam Mistress' desire and takes in as many reservations as possible. At the grave, Sui talks about how she does not want to burden the staff with her dream, but Ohana retirts that it is not a burden. Sui suddenly feels a pain in her chest and rests in a nearby house. Sui continues to talk about how she doesn't want to burden the staff with the burden that once drove Satsuki Matsumae away from home. Because of this, she knows that Enishi has become stubborn about Kissuisō and she wishes to free him of this burden. But Ohana, as usual, is not able to read the mood, but states that she feels like her anger has gone away. Sui chuckles and asks Ohana to fest up until the Bonbori festival.

Ohana and Sui returns to the inn, but see that the representatives of the other inns of the area have gathered at the front of Kissuisō. They are asking the staff to provide someone to help with the festival, but they say they will not. Seeing that this is causing trouble, Sui tells Ohana to go. The staff are not happy as they wished to show that they want to put Kissuisō into priority. Ohana sees this and wonders what she should do...

25. My Beloved Kissuiso  私の好きな喜翆荘
Even though it is time to prepare for the Bonbori festival, the Kissuiso staff makes themselves busy to accept and take care of all reservations that are coming in. Ohana herself does not feel that Kissuiso is Kissuiso right now, but when she tries to console with the staff about this, almost all of them ignores her. The reason for this is because they believe Ohana is siding with the Madam Mistress, which is not actually true. Ohana continues to see the staff change their ways, and soon enough they start to get dysfunctional. Nako asks Ohana what the Madam Mistress desires by closing down the inn, and sees that the Madam is wrong about the idea that she is forcing her dreams upon the staff. Nako believes that some people follows other's dreams in order to make their own, and that is how the staff of Kissuiso dreams.
Few days before the Bonbori festival, the kitchen staff and the head waitress has a quarrel about how the other is not working enough, which is stopped by Enishi. He wants peace, and the staff follows that. But the day before the festival, tension rises as the head waitress sprains her leg. The staff are already overworked and need help, but no assistance is available. The staff argues, until when Nako talks about how she wants the Kissuiso she knows of back. At that same time, the Madam Mistress and an unexpectedly visiting Satsuki both offers to help, Enishi's emotion overrides and he tries to deny the help. Takako makes him wake, telling him his goal is to keep Kissuiso standing, not be too prideful of Kissuiso. With the acceptance of the help by the two, somehow, the tension seizes and the next day, the staff works without any incidents. At the end of the day, after all work is done, all of them goes out to the Bonbori festival...

26. To Bloom One Day 花咲くいつか
It is finally the day of the Bonbori festival. As everyone explores the festival, Ohana, who now dreams of being just like the Madam Mistress, goes to meet up with Kō, finally confessing her feelings for him. After the festival, a farewell party is held for Denryoku, where Enishi announces that he agrees to the Kissuiso being shut down until he feels he is talented enough to run it properly. As the Kissuiso closes down the next day and everyone parts ways to where they are to go, Sui sees off Ohana, who promises to return someday. After Ohana says that, Sui gives her Denryoku's log as a keepsake, showing that Sui also expects to see Kissuiso stand up again one day.
